My First Month at Morton Reeves Estate Agency: From Nerves to Confidence
Hi! I’m Harlie, and I’m here to share the journey of my first month working at Morton Reeves Estate Agency. Coming from an insurance background, this opportunity was a huge shift for me. I had no idea what to expect, and the nerves were there. However, I quickly realized that many of the skills I developed in insurance—like communication, client management, and problem-solving—would transfer over, which gave me a small boost of confidence.
Week One: Settling In and Understanding the Basics
Right from the start, I felt welcomed by Paul and Leigh, who were both incredibly supportive in helping me get settled. They made sure I understood the fundamentals of how the company operates and invited me to join them on appointments such as property viewings and valuations. I was a little nervous, especially about how to present myself to clients and how to handle tough questions, but they reassured me by teaching me the different processes involved in these appointments. I quickly got the hang of things, and my nerves started to ease.
What stood out during this week was how hands-on the learning process was. After each appointment, Paul and Leigh would debrief with me, discussing what went well, what could have been better, and how to smooth out my approach for next time. I also learned practical skills, such as identifying damp and rot in properties—a crucial skill that will help me in my role as I move forward.
Week Two & Three: Getting Confident with Client Interaction
As the weeks went on, I started to take on more responsibilities, starting with answering the phones and booking viewings. Initially, I focused on gathering details like contact numbers and other necessary information. But as I grew more familiar with our agency’s systems, I started booking appointments on my own. Soon enough, I was handling all communications directly with clients and potential buyers, which was a big confidence boost. It felt rewarding to be the main point of contact for certain clients, and it made me realize how much trust and responsibility come with the job.
One of the things I really appreciate about working here is the emphasis on client care. Whether it’s ensuring that our clients are kept in the loop after each viewing or explaining potential issues (like asbestos surveys), we always prioritize their needs and make sure they are well-informed. I’ve learned that transparency and communication are key in maintaining trust with clients, especially when it comes to the nitty-gritty details of the process.
Moving Forward: Taking on New Challenges
By week four, I had developed a good understanding of most of the administrative tasks, such as handling memorandum of sales and managing appointments. During my spare time, Leigh offered me the chance to get involved in business development by creating a leaflet distribution plan to help target specific areas for growth. It felt great to be trusted with this project and to see how these small, targeted efforts can make a big difference in driving business.
Looking ahead, I’m excited for what’s to come. Once I’ve mastered these smaller tasks, I’ll start doing my own viewings and property inspections. Who knows? I might even take on my own listings in the future. It’s all part of the progression, and I’m eager to continue learning and growing.
Reflecting on the First Month
Overall, my first month at Morton Reeves has been an incredible experience. I’ve learned so much about how the property market works, and I’ve developed new skills—especially in communication and client management—that I know will be invaluable in my career. Paul and Leigh have been fantastic mentors, taking time out of their busy schedules to train and guide me, and I really appreciate their support.
I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me. I’m excited to grow in this role, and I’m confident that, with time and experience, I’ll be able to take on even more responsibilities and challenges. The first month has been an exciting and rewarding start, and I’m looking forward to what comes next!
